• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Jay G. -- The most impenetrable translation I've ever tried to read. : The translator of this has managed to turn a short work of simple truths into a mouthful of Shakespearean/King James-esque language that only serves to discourage/alienate the reader before they can even access the material itself. Unnecessarily dense, stilted, and archaic - a disservice to such an important and practical work. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020 )

If you only buy one book, make it this one (although maybe not this printing). It is a guide to living a good life regardless of what may happen around you. Things don't happen TO you; they simply happen, If you treat events in this rational way, their impact on you is lessened, in fact virtually eliminated. You can choose to be happy in any circumstance. Limit your desires to those things which you can get by means within your control, and you need never be disappointed again. Be ready to say 'Who cares?' to things you could have wished for or events outside your control, and they need never concern you. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2018 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ra -- Simply written, practical wisdom. : One of three of my favorite philosophical works, besides the Letters Of A Stoic, and Marcus Aurelius' meditations. It's written in simpler fashion than the other two works I mentioned, and is full of poignant truths. I paraphrase, "A man devoid of wisdom blames others for his troubles, one just entering upon wisdom blames himself, but a truly wise man blames neither others nor himself". This, at least to me, is one of the many things said in this simply written, but beautiful book worthy of a lifetime's contemplation. Stoicism is a very practical brand of philosophy, one which can change a person's life drastically for the better should they be willing to internalize and use it. The wisdom in this book, literally helps me walk out of my door and deal with life, and it will do the same for you. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2017 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Curious Dan -- Epictetus is the Man! : The man was a slave who only earned his freedom years after his master cruelly disciplined him by breaking his leg. Went on to found a practice still in use today thousands of years later. He had a lot of other ups and downs as well, but the main thing is he wasn't killed by an authority figure.
